Saunders County, NE - The search for a missing hunter ends tragically. Rescue crews found the body of 41-year-old Mike Odermann of Omaha, outside Wahoo Tuesday afternoon. His family believes, while hunting, he tripped over his rifle and accidentally shot himself. Mike's younger brother, Kyle Odermann, was on the scene.
Kyle Odermann: "I'm 35 years old and I still want to be just like my big brother when I grow up."
The Saunders County Sheriff's Department tells Action 3 News, deputies located Mike's vehicle outside of Wahoo on County Road 30. They followed his footprints to find his body. Kyle says news of Mike's death devastated his family, especially Mike's three children.
Kyle Odermann: "He was everybody's favorite uncle, everybody's favorite dad, everybody's favorite guy to hang out with. He'd give his shirt off his back when he didn't have a shirt to give."
Kyle says the days ahead will be tough, and it's hard to think about the holidays without Mike, but it'll always be easy for Kyle to think about Mike, and the brother he was.
Kyle Odermann: "No matter what happened, he always had a smile on his face. The memory I'll have of him, he's the kind of guy that just rolled up his sleeves and got things done."
The Saunders County Sheriff's Department is investigating the shooting.
