3.5 Earthquake Jolts Nebraska Residents

Posted:

Auburn, NE:  The U.S. Geological Survey reports a 3.5 magnitude earthquake rattled southeast Nebraska at 8:53 Wednesday night.  The epicenter is about 2 miles outside of Auburn.  Over 90 residents reported feeling the tremor ranging from Johnson County to Lincoln even as far away as Saint Louis, Missouri.

The USGS tells Action 3 News the earthquake happened along the Humboldt Fault Line.  A spokesperson says it is not common for tremors to occur in Nebraska, but they are not overly concerned with this event.

Action 3 News spoke with Johnson and Nemaha County dispatch who have been flooded with phone calls.  People report feeling the ground shake underneath them, hearing loud booms as things fell and windows rattling.  Robert Cole with Nemaha County Emergency Management says so far no injuries or reports of major damage have been reported.  Surveyors will be out first thing tomorrow morning to evaluate any damage that did occur.
