Wahoo, NE - A quick moving winter storm is to blame for a deadly accident on Highway 92 near Wahoo. Saunders County Sheriff's Department tells 'Action 3 News' a semi-truck lost control on the ice while driving eastbound. The truck hit Mark Wagner as he drove westbound home, Wagner died at the scene.
Mark Wagner was a son, a husband and the father of four children. He was killed while driving home on Highway 92 near Wahoo. Facebook pages of Marks' family pay tribute. One brothers message reads:
"My brother Mark was killed today.. His daughter was just born four days ago. I wish God was able to give me a sign, anything something to hold there longer. My last goodbye at 4 PM today is all I have. Big brother Mark, I love you!!"
People in Wahoo tell 'Action 3 News' a call was made to 911 shortly before 5:00 PM to report dangerous driving conditions on Highway 92. Saunders County Communications confirms several calls were made from citizens complaining about the highway.
Action 3 News dug deeper learning from Chief Deputy Robert Thorson state trucks were working the road all night. In fact, a salt and sand truck actually went over the accident site just ten minutes before the fatal collision. "They're constantly on that road. This made it a little tougher this particular instance here because of the wind. It's my understanding there was a snow plow/sand truck behind the semi," says Thorson.
The Chief Deputy tells 'Action 3 News' he drove the same highway Monday afternoon and it was treacherous. He says the lay of the land allows snow to drift easily over the road. A dangerous area that has cost one family too much.
Mark Wagner's funeral will be this Friday. As for the semi-truck driver he has not been ticketed. The Nebraska State Patrol is investigating the crash. When they are done they'll turn the case over to the county attorney who will then decide if any charges will be filed.
