BEATRICE, Neb. (AP) - It's not just farmers who are harvesting corn.

The public is invited to Homestead National Monument near Beatrice to fill 5-gallon buckets of corn from the Heritage Farm Field.

The corn variety is Hickory King, an open-pollinated heirloom variety of white corn. It is known for its large kernels and small cobs. The corn was planted last spring using a check-row planter pulled by horses.

Each person is allowed to take home one bucket-full of corn and containers are not provided.

The Heritage Farm Field is located between Nebraska Highway 4 and the Heritage Center at Homestead National Monument, which is four miles west of Beatrice.

Corn is expected to be available for harvest for the next few weeks.
