FEMA director tours Cedar Rapids neighborhood

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) - The director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency says much of the emergency-management work in Cedar Rapids is finished and that his agency will focus on preventing future disasters in the city.

FEMA director Craig Fugate (FEW-gate) says the agency's priority for Cedar Rapids is preventing future flooding, focusing on the watershed north and west of the city.

The floods in June 2008 caused an estimated $6 billion in damage to Cedar Rapids and submerged some areas in more than 30 feet of water.

On Tuesday, Fugate toured a city neighborhood just blocks from the Cedar River with Iowa Gov. Chet Culver and congressman Dave Loebsack. Owners of nearly 200 homes in the area are eligible to receive FEMA money and move, but some residents have chosen to rebuild.
