Associated Press - September 15, 2009 10:55 AM ET

HASTINGS, Neb. (AP) - A 20-year-old man from Ogallala will spend four days in jail as part of his sentence for vehicular manslaughter.

On Monday, Thomas Knott also was sentenced to five years of probation by Judge Stephen Illingworth of Adams County District Court.

After a deal with prosecutors, Knott had pleaded guilty to manslaughter. Four other charges were dropped.

Police say Knott was drunk Nov. 7 when he ran a stop sign in Hastings and crashed into a car driven by 22-year-old Jose Ramirez. Ramirez died at the scene.

The days Knott must spend in jail are the date of the accident, the date Ramirez died, the date Knott was born and the date Ramirez was born.
