Man dies after being sucked under at CR dam

Associated Press - July 30, 2009 4:34 PM ET

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) - A woman who was with a 30-year-old Cedar Rapids man who died while riding a watercraft near a dam has been charged with drunken boating.

Court records show 36-year-old Bobbiejo McDanniel of Cedar Rapids appeared in court Thursday on a charge of operating a watercraft while under the influence. Fire department spokesman Greg Buelow says McDanniel was riding a separate craft alongside Christopher Clark on Wednesday when he got too close to the Cedar Rapids roller dam and was sucked under.

Buelow says McDanniel tried to help Clark but bystanders yelled for her to leave the area.

Clark was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to a local hospital. An autopsy was conducted but officials say laboratory results could take weeks.
