Guns Stashed in Omaha Parks

Omaha, NE.- Getting an illegal gun in Omaha is far easier than anyone knew.

They're being stashed in parks, bushes, and plenty of other public places.

Action 3 News found out about these illegal stashes, as top law enforcement officials around the state come to Omaha to examine a brand new gun fighting weapon.

Senator Brad Ashford, Chairman of the Legislature's Judiciary Committee, holds a hearing in Omaha on Friday. It will examine Omaha's gun problem and possibly bring a Chicago area anti-violence operation to Omaha.

Ashford says the guns are, "Stashed in various parks and right on the road really. And these are assault weapons, assault type weapons."

According to Ashford the guns were discovered by Omaha police. Ashford says the overall gun problem is so big that he wants to bring a Chicago based crime control operation to Omaha.

It's known as CeaseFire.

CeaseFire takes ex-gang members, sends them into the city's hot spots, where they try to stop the shooters before they shoot.

On Wednesday Former Omaha police chief Thomas Warren came out in favor of CeaseFire. Warren says the benefits outweigh any potential risks. The main risk: relying on those ex-gang members.
