"God" Responds to Ernie Chambers Lawsuit

Updated:

Omaha, NE -- State Senator Ernie Chambers sues God, to make him stop floods, earthquakes and terroristic threats.
Now God--or someone claiming to be God--responds.

A one-page document showed up rather mysteriously at the Douglas County Courthouse yesterday.
Everyone there knows about it...no one knows where it came from...and nobody knows what to make of it.
At the bottom, the so-called defendant printed his name--God.

Gordon Rieber in the Clerk of the District Court's office tells Action 3 News reporter Kathy Sarantos Niver they weren't expecting a response.

     But they got one anyway.
The paper marked "Special Appearance" appeared out of nowhere in the clerk's office.
Rieber tells us: "It was on the counter in legal filing yesterday. No one saw it come in. She (an employee) turned her back and there it was. It could have been a miraculous situation."

     "God" kept it simple.
He says he wasn't served a summons by a deputy...so the suit should be thrown out.
A longtime defense attorney agrees "God" has a good strategy: "It looks to me like a legitimate document that would have to be sustained by the judge."
Several attorneys we talked with denied writing the document, but say they're available if God needs them in court. Defense attorney James Martin Davis volunteers: "He (God) hasn't called me yet!" Davis says he must have survived a heart attack last June for a reason: "I knew there was a special reason I was saved. I didn't know it might be to represent God Almighty!"

In the document, "God" says State Senator Ernie Chambers will pay for his lawsuit.
Attorney Gallup says: "As it says in the special appearance, God doesn't issue terroristic threats, but he is going to take care of Senator Chambers by removing him from office next year."
"God" apparently has a sense of humor--term limits keep Chambers from serving another term.
But then, someone else around the courthouse seems to have a sense of humor too.

The judge hasn't set a date yet to hear the Chambers' lawsuit.
