Omaha, NE: New developments in a heart wrenching story may add a some hope to a little girl who is in desparte need of a transplant. Colorado health care says they are doing everything they can to get Emerson White coverage.
Two year old Emerson White is fighting for her life. With tubes taped onto her little body, her mother Erika White fights too-but for a different reason. The little girl suffers a rare metabolic disorder. Emerson was forced to undergo a multiple organ transplant at UNMC. After a successful transplant her body rejected one of the organs. Emerson now needs another operation to save her life.
Her primary insurance is capped out at 2 million dollars. A special Colorado medicade waver was helping the family pay the bills, until they hit a catch. To qualify they have to get health care from local Colorado Springs doctors but no one there does this transplant Emerson needs. "I had a phone call from medicade that said they were dropping her effective at the end of January."
Now there may be hope. Sue Williamson with Colorado Health Department tells Action 3 News, "Because her daughter has been in the hospital for an extended period of time we think that there might be eligibility connected to the fact that she hasn't been in the home." She says her team is working around the clock to find the money "We are in constant conversation with mom and we are asking her to submit a regular medicaid application. Hopefully we can find another eligibility door to keep Emerson on medicaid."
