Omaha Man Victim of Possible Hate Crime

Omaha, NE - It's not the welcome to Omaha one man expected after someone wrote racial slurs on his mailbox. Kevin Ashby moved to Omaha four months ago for a change of pace, but instead became the target of a possible hate crime.

"I left my home to find that someone had written some racial slurs on my mailbox outside and it said something to the effect of 'die n-word, die'," Kevin said.

His mailbox at his apartment near 132nd and Harrison has since been replaced, but his anger from the hateful words remains.

"I feel violated," he said.

And this isn't the first time he's fallen victim to a vandalism. One week before the hateful graffiti appeared on Kevin's mailbox, someone smashed out his car windshield. He can't help but think it was the same person who tagged his mailbox.

"I think it's too coincidental for it not to be connected," Kevin said.

The vandalisms anger Kevin's neighbor Phillipe.

"I don't like it," Phillipe said. "Everybody's seen what he did to this mailbox and what he did to his car too and that's not good."

"I think in this day and age, I shouldn't have to worry about hate crimes and racial slurs and things of that sort," Kevin said.

Kevin contacted police, and they are investigating.
