Omaha, NE -- A postal pot bust. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office ticketed three postmen, for smoking marijuana on the job. It's the culmination of a two week investigation.
The accused included David Thomas, Robert Kreiser and Marty Barham. All long time employees of the Omaha Post Office. We're told all three have been put on administrative leave.
The mailman marijuana investigation started when the office of the Inspector General of the United States Post Office became suspicious of a few employees.
"She was concerned that there was marijuana being used at the post office, so she called us in, says Lt. Ken Lant.
For two weeks neighbors say they watched undercover federal agents stake out the nearby neighborhood. On Wednesday, investigators claim, they caught two men smoking marijuana in the area of the post office annex near Pacific street in a postal truck.
"One of the postal carriers was picking up another employee on his lunch hour and then they would drive off into the nearby neighborhood and smoke marijuana."
Investigators also tell us they found marijuana on post office property in cars.
"Well it's a misdemeanor just given that and that they are smoking marijuana while on the job is not right according to their supervisors and that's why we got called in."
Only one of the accused, Robert Kreiser agreed to talk with us on the phone. He said that what he did was a huge mistake. Kreiser also said he was done with all of his work for the day when deputies ticketed him for smoking marijuana. He's doing everything he can, he says, to keep his job.
