Omaha, NE - There is good news for the toddler who was brutally attacked by a pit bull last week. Charlotte Blevins went home with her family this afternoon, after spending several days at Creighton University Medical Center.
The dog attacked Blevins, her mother, another woman and her toddler son last Wednesday. The four were taking a walk near 40th and Vinton when the dog went into a rage. It bit down on Charlotte's head, tearing off a large part of her scalp. Charlotte's mom and the other woman with her fought to pry the dog loose and get it away from their kids.
"He knew what he was doing," says Wendy Blevins, Charlotte's mom. "He knew what he was doing, he went directly for the kids."
However, the dogs owner tells Action 3 News her pit bull only attacked because it was spooked by the sound of the wheels on the wagon that was carrying the children.
Doctors tell Charlotte's parents the little girl has a long recovery ahead of her, but they tell us she is a fighter. The mother is now pushing for a ban on pit bulls. " I will go through the most awkward situation (giving television interviews). . . if it helps another family to not have to go through years of surgery with their child," says Wendy Blevins.
The Nebraska Humane Society tested the pit bull and did not find any sign of rabies. The Humane Society is now waiting on the test results for another pit bull that bit an Omaha police officer last Thursday night.
