Plastic Surgeon Talks About Toddler's Recovery After Pit Bull Attack

Posted:

Omaha, NE- Doctors say Duke, the pit bull literally "scalped" the little girl who was riding in a red wagon with another child Monday night.

A neighbor who witnessed the attack told Action 3 NEws, "The baby didn't have any scalp it was on the wagon." Stefan Ray called it a bloody and horrible sight.
But a day and one surgery later, doctors say little Charlotte is on the mend and no longer critical. Dr. Amardip Bhuller from Creighton University Medical Center says, "She's doing great. The child is happy but her parents are devastated."

Dr. Bhuller says the wound covers about a third of the toddler's head.
As part of the reconstructive surgery, he reattached pieces of her scalp to her head ripped off by the dog.

At the scene, Ray says, "We found chunks of scalp and gave it to police officers who took it on ice to the hospital to reattach ."

Dr. Bhuller says, "That was excellent of the paramedics to bring that in. Any tissue that's lost we can use in plastic surgery to  the wounds as temporizing measures."

And that covered most of the head wound.
But the plastic surgeon warns, this is just the beginning for Charlotte. She will undergo multiple and years of painful surgeries.

He does believe one day she will be able to grow hair on her head and have no obvious defect. Her next surgery is scheduled for Monday. Dr. Bhuller says he hopes to find out if the scalp took to Charlotte's head. He is worried infection may set in because of the dog bite.
