Little Sioux, IA - Plans are already underway to reopen parts of the Little Sioux Boy Scout Ranch, destroyed in the tornado Wednesday night. Mid-America Council Executive/President Lloyd Roitstein said Friday, "As we rebuild that camp, all of our facilities in the future will have storm shelters in them." Roitstein is expecting the National Chief Executive of Boy Scouts of America to arrive in Omaha to help develop plans to assist the families affected by the storm and the camp rebuilding plans.
Four scouts were killed, dozens injured. Three of the boys are from Omaha; Josh Fennen, Sam Thomsen and Ben Petrzilka. The fourth scout, Aaron Eilerts is from Eagle Grove, Iowa.
Ninety-six boys were at the camp for leadership training, the scouts are 13 - 18 years old, most are from Omaha, Council Bluffs and Bellevue. Roitstein describes the scouts as "the best of the best". The camp is a high-adventure camp, the scouts are trained to respond to emergencies.
In an interview with Action 3 News, 18-year-old Tom White, a member of the staff, described watching the storm develop and as a funnel cloud formed, the camp sirens were activated. He said many scouts were hurt when a fireplace collapsed.
