North Liberty, IA - Officials are investigating whether reports of a bear in eastern Iowa are true.
Don Pfeiffer, a wildlife supervisor for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, says there have been 11 reported sightings of a bear along Mudd Creek on the southern edge of North Liberty over the past two days. North Liberty is just south of Cedar Rapids.
He says an initial investigation found dog tracks in the area, but he didn't discount the possibility the animal people are seeing is a small black bear.
He says what authorities need is a verification of tracks or a picture of the animal. Pfeiffer says that right now, people are just speculating.
Local police have asked people in the area to be aware of their surroundings and local elementary schools have sent home notices to parents telling them of the reports. Students at Van Allen Elementary School were kept inside for recess as a precaution.
