Lincoln, NE - Coach Bo Pelini is laying down the law. Over the weekend one of his Nebraska football Players was arrested for sexual assault, and two others were ticketed after police broke up a party in Lincoln.
Pelini fired off a statement Tuesday. He wants fans to know that every player involved in the weekend arrests is being dealt with individually. Some players have been suspended from the team, others face different punishments.
"I talked with the entire team last night and clearly explained to them that from this point forward we will have a zero tolerance policy regarding alcohol and social responsibility," Pelini wrote. "Our players understand the intent of this rule and what we are trying to accomplish."
Nebraska offensive lineman Andy Christensen was arrested Saturday after a woman accused him of sexual assault. Pelini suspended Christensen. Christensen was arrested outside the Brass Rail bar. A 23-year-old woman told police he reached under her clothes and assaulted her.
Christensen, a junior, started the first three games at left guard last fall before suffering a knee injury. He will appear in court Wednesday.
Also Saturday night, Lincoln Police ticketed Husker defensive lineman Ben Martin and offensive lineman Mike Smith. Officers say the two refused to leave a party police were breaking up. Former Nebraska football players Maurice Purify and Carl Nicks were also ticketed at the party.
In his statement, Coach Pelini says, "Coach Osborne, myself and our staff are all in agreement that the culture of this program will be one centered on respect, integrity and discipline. We all agree that culture must extend well beyond the football field."
