Darfur Rally Makes Stop in Omaha

Updated:

Omaha, NE -  400,000 people murdered and millions forced from their homes, it's a massacre striking the Darfur region in Africa. And now people here in Omaha are working to end it.      From Washington the state, to Washington D.C., a torch symbolizing the Olympic games and hope for peace will travel throughout the U.S. making a final stop on China's doorstep. On Sunday, that torch was here in Omaha.

Forced out of his country by murder and violence, Abdelheamid Mohammed feels safe now here in the U.S., but worries about the family he's left behind. "We lost everything, we lost our childhood," says Mohammed. Mohammed comes from the Darfur region of Western Sudan where thousands of innocent people are killed each month and millions more are forced from their homes. "Many killed, many murdered, displacement of many families, I am one of them. I don't know where my family is now."

Worrying about his family, Mohammed tries to gain awareness to stop the masssacre. Holding a torch, he runs in the dream for the, "Darfur Olympic Relay." With China being the home of the 2008 Olympics, the goal is to pressure them to use their influence to end the genocide. And plenty of Omaha residents showed up to Memorial Park in support. "I think as humans we should look out for each other. People need to realize the atrocities that go on over there and we need to be more aware of it," says Bellevue West sophmore Chelsea Burkett.

While high school students throughout the metro handed out information packets, some of the youngest supporters used their hands to sign their support and get others to show theirs as well.

Once the rally ended, the fire from the torch was passed on to each person by candles, just as they hope the message will be spread to people throughout the world.

Mohammed has been in the states for a little over a year now and is already working and going to Iowa Western. Meanwhile, that torch is expected to hit China some time in December.
