Gun Amnesty Day Brings In More Guns Than Expected

Omaha, NE - Omaha police are teaming up with local organizations to fight the war on crime. Gun Amnesty Day turned out to be a big success, bringing in even more guns this month than the last.

Dangerous weapons are handed over to police. No questions are asked and no identification is taken. "I'm very pleased about today," said Omaha Police Sgt. Eric Nordby.

Gun Amnesty Day was a big success according to police. In four hours, 38 revolvers, pistols, rifles, even shotguns, some of them considered illegal were dropped off to police. It all happened in an effort to fight the war on crime. "It has exceeded our expectations, especially the guns that have been turned in," said Family First Pastor Tony Sanders. "We have so far at least one short shotgun turned in, one SKS which is a high powered assault rifle commonly used in crimes around Omaha," said Nordby.

The Emerging Leaders Empowerment Network holds up signs on the side of the street, encouraging others to give up the guns. "It's definitely making a difference.  People are seeing the community does care and we're out here trying to make a difference and get these guns off the street so they're not used at all," said Aja Anderson with Emerging Leaders Empowerment Network.

This is the second Gun Amnesty Day held this summer. Now organizers hope to schedule another one by the end of the year. The team of volunteers are making a small difference in a big way. "I think it's needed because some people simply don't know how to get rid of their firearms," said Nordby.

June's Gun Amnesty Day brought in 30 guns. July's brought in 38 guns.
