Washington, D.C.--It's the largest recall of cribs in U.S. history and it may be the beginning of major changes in cribs.
Stork Craft Manufacturing Inc. is recalling more than 2.1 million drop-side cribs, some with the Fisher-Price logo, in both the United States and Canada.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission says the problem is malfunctioning hardware that can trap a baby between the crib and the mattress. Four babies have died from suffocation due to this issue. If you have one of these affected cribs, you're being told to stop using it immediately and contact Stork Craft for a free repair kit toll-free at (877) 274-0277 or log on to www.storkcraft.com
This recall highlights a much bigger problem with cribs that have sides that drop down. While families like the feature because it makes reaching a baby easier, in the last two years there have been dozens of deaths and five million cribs recalled from various manufacturers. Most of them involved cribs with drop down sides.
Now, the CPSC is working on federal regulations of cribs and even the industry is considering banning the drop-side models.
