People Wait Hours In Cold To Get H1N1 Shots

Omaha, NE - Hundreds of people stand out in the cold, trying to avoid getting a cold.  The Sarpy and Cass County H1N1 vaccination clinic was held Saturday.  So many people showed up to get their shots, the clinic was forced to turn dozens away.

A line out the door, down the sidewalk and around the corner. Everyone waits, hoping to get the H1N1 flu shot before the clinic runs out or shuts its doors; whichever comes first. "I was surprised, I just didn't expect it to be this long," said parent, Meena Dudeni.

One little girl waits with her family. She may be the only 8-year-old who's actually excited to get the shot. "I don't want to get sick again with the H1N1," said 8-year-old, Madison Beaman.

A few weeks ago the little girl had the flu. Remembering her high fever and how lousy she felt is enough for her to say, sign me up! "It wasn't that much fun," the girl said.

People first started getting in-line about 4:30am Saturday. With less than 1000 H1N1 shots to give out, people waiting want to make sure they got their shot before the clinic runs out. "I think the unknown, just the fear of the H1N1 flu," said parent, Brian Elmore.

It's that fear that made dad, Brian Elmore and hundreds of other parents take action. "I worry about my children," said Madison Beaman's mother, Tracy Beaman.

The clinic gave shots to people only in the high risk groups. One junior high school teacher was born without a spleen, causing her to have a low immune system.  Protecting herself from the virus and her students who may have it, is a must. "I had two kids in one class yesterday, so that scares me because they're all gone with the flu," said teacher, Michelle Timm.

About 60 people had to be turned away from the clinic. The Sarpy and Cass County Department of Health and Wellness stuck about 350 people with the H1N1 shot. They're hoping to hold more clinics in the coming weeks.
