Abortion foes question UNMC ties to groups

Associated Press - October 23, 2009 3:45 PM ET

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Abortion opponents question whether the University of Nebraska Medical Center's ties to pro-research groups will lead to an effort to overturn state restrictions on embryonic stem cell research.

Julie Schmit-Albin of Nebraska Right to Life was among several speakers at Friday's Board of Regents meeting to point to an effort by South Dakotans for Life-Saving Cures to overturn that state's ban on the research through petition initiative.

Two similar groups partnered with UNMC on its recent Science Cafe series, a public-education effort.

Schmit-Albin says those types of affiliations have led to successful petition initiatives in other states.

Nebraska law prohibits the use of state money or facilities for creating or destroying embryos for research.
