WAKEFIELD, Neb. (AP) - Wakefield voters have rejected fluoridation.

The vote Tuesday was 135 to 8 against the idea of adding fluoride to the town's water supply.

Wakefield is a town of about 1,400 in northeast Nebraska.

A state law passed last year requires fluoridation in cities with more than 1,000 people unless local voters opt out by June 2010.

Those places where there is enough naturally occurring fluoride don't have to add any.

Although fluoride has been shown to prevent tooth decay, some people believe the substance is poisonous.

In November, voters in several Nebraska cities rejected fluoridation, including Bayard, Broken Bow, Chadron, Gothenburg, Kimball, North Platte and York.

Crete was among the cities that approved a fluoridation measure.
