Louisville Mourns The Death Of Popular Teen

Posted:

South Bend, NE - Cass County Sheriff investigators tell Action 3 News 18-year-old Michael Matchus was driving a pick-up truck when he lost control.  The sheriff says Michael took a corner too quickly and over-corrected, causing the truck to roll, throwing three passengers out of the truck.  One victim had to be extracted.  It happened Saturday around 12:20 AM in South Bend at the intersection of Highway 66 and Kansas Street.

Robert Smisek heard the crash, because it happened right outside his house.  He called 9-1-1 and tried to help the victims.   He paid special attention to Margo Marino, who was thrown about 100 feet from where the truck landed.   Smisek stayed by her side until help arrived.  "I was just trying to keep the one that I was with coherent so she didn't go into shock, which she was starting to.   I just did what I could do," said Smisek.

Michael Matchus' 21-year-old brother Kyle survived the crash and is in serious condition.  Other survivors include 21-year-old Margo Marino of Louisville,  who is in critical condition, twenty-one- year-old Brandi Heanue of Louisville, who is in fair condition, nineteen-year-old Ellen Etzenbach of Peru, IL, who is in critical condition, and 23-year-old Kurt Etzenbach of Morton, IL, who has been released from the hospital.

Michael Matchus is a recent graduate of Louisville High School.  His friends and friends of the victims showed up to the crash scene to console one another and remember someone special.
