Fingerprints and Mug Shot Taken of Top CSI In Evidence Tampering Case

Posted:

Omaha, NE-  Douglas County's head CSI goes on the defensive.
The lead investigator who helps put criminals behind bars finds himself on the other side of the law.  U.S. Marshalls take Dave Kofoed's mug shot and fingerprints after he tells a judge he's not guilty of several serious charges.
The criminal accusations stem from his investigation of the murders of this Murdock couple in 2006.   Kofoed tells the judge he's not guilty of the four charges.
A Grand Jury indicted the 52 year old CSI of falsifying records, mail fraud and violating the civil rights of Matthew Livers and Nick Sampson.
Detectives originally arrested the pair for the murders of Wayne and Sharmon Stock. The men made false confessions, but were set free after evidence showed they didn't do it.
A Wisconsin couple killed the Stocks and are serving life sentences in prison.
Kofoed is accused of mishandling blood evidence and purposely mis-dating a report about the DNA of one of the victims. Kofoed has admitted to Action 3 News he made a mistake, but insists it wasn't malicious.  The US Attorney contends Kofoed's actions kept two innocent men in jail for several months. The judge released Kofoed without bond but did ask for his passport.
He still faces a state charge in Cass County of tampering with evidence in the same case and goes to court for that later this month.

Kofoed is on paid leave from the sheriff's department.
