Lincoln, NE - A Marine is honored in Lincoln Sunday. A street sign is named after him two years after his death. It took a year to get it approved by the city.
A single trumpet sings the song of a fallen soldier. "He made friends everywhere he went, deeply, unbelievably. I'm still in contact with so many of them. Some I only met through Michael's death," said mother, Debbie Chandler.
Patriot Guard Riders, family, and friends gather not to mourn, but to celebrate. For one man's name will live on just like his spirit. With the determination of his mother, a new street off of Northwest 48th in Lincoln is named in honor of Lance Corporal Mike Scholl. "I drive by everyday," Chandler said.
People passing by may not think this new street sign is a big deal, but to Mike Scholl's family and friends, it symbolizes a new beginning, a new road, not the end.
A roadside bomb took the life of the 21-year-old Marine in Iraq two years ago. He lives on through his two-year-old daughter he never got a chance to meet. "Michael touched so many people's lives, there's so many people here," said Chandler.
The sign is comforting to friends, knowing kids at a nearby elementary school will learn his story. "Now the street can be a new beginning and everybody can be watched over and have a chance to grow knowing that a hero was from that area," said friend, Josh East.
Hundreds of people attended the ceremony including Congressman Jeff Fortenberry and Lincoln Mayor Chris Beutler.
